Calipari and the Knicks? A longshot at best

You had to figure that within about five minutes of Donnie Walsh’s resignation as New York Knicks president that talk would fire up about University of Kentucky coach John Calipari.

I was going to use the word "rumor," but upon further reflection, this is less rumor than speculation. If franchise sources are feeding the name to some media outlets, it’s not the name they’re feeding first.

The Bergen Record lists Calipari among five "possible candidates" to run the franchise, and apparently has gotten inside the mind of the coach, reporting about him, "The former Nets coach wants to return to the NBA and would leave Kentucky, especially for a coach-GM combo." The New York Post reports today that "maybe even John Calipari (is) expected to be approached," but does not list him as a leading candidate, according to sources. And "maybe" is pretty far from definitive.

ESPN.com mentioned six leading potential candidates and Calipari wasn’t among them.

I wouldn’t bet on it, not this time.
