KSR Matt Jones All-Access with Kentucky
On Saturday afternoon, Kentucky defeated Florida 76-68 in Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. In the 24 hours leading up to the game, CBSSports.com was given an all-access look at the team and its preparation for a big SEC home game. Over three parts, Matt Jones will detail the team’s activities, beginning with practice the day before through Saturday's game. Preparation varies from team to team, but Kentucky's process is similar to many other programs. We begin with Kentucky’s practice Friday afternoon. Parts 2 and 3 will run later this week.

Darius Miller Career High with win over No 13 Florida
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Darius Miller let the 3-pointer fly from the top of the key. When it splashed through the net to clinch Kentucky's biggest victory of the season, the normally reserved forward turned and briefly stuck his tongue out in celebration.
Saving a season sure tasted sweet.
Miller scored a career-high 24 points and the 22nd-ranked Wildcats surged past No. 13 Florida 76-68 on Saturday, the kind of confidence-boosting victory Kentucky desperately needed following another late-game road meltdown against Arkansas on Wednesday that left coach John Calipari questioning his team's toughness.
- UK's best, biggest game of the year?
- Calipari: 500 victories about surviving
- Postgame video interviewsAgainst the Gators, he got some answers, particularly from Miller. Calipari openly challenged Miller after a loss at Florida three weeks ago, pointing out his mistakes in a tough 70-68 defeat.

Blame Tennessee's NCAA infractions on more than Bruce Pearl, Kiffin - Stewart Mandel - SI.com
On Wednesday Tennessee released its 26-page Notice of Allegations from the NCAA, which outlines 11 major violations previously reported by the media over the past year. Basketball coach Bruce Pearl is accused of unethical conduct, failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and failure to monitor his assistants. Former football coach Lane Kiffin is also accused of failure to promote an atmosphere of compliance and failure to monitor his assistants.
At no point, however, does the document mention the man who should ultimately be held responsible for fielding two such dysfunctional, rule-breaking programs; the man who hired both coaches, then stood back and let them make a mockery of the NCAA rule book. Somehow, athletic director Mike Hamilton has escaped the NCAA's wrath despite his two most high-profile employees' complete disregard for the most basic tenets of compliance.

Kentucky falls to Arkansas in OT when Knight runs out of heroics
Pelphrey gets first win against ex-team as Hogs top Cats in OT
Another loss on the road in the Southeastern Conference left Kentucky ... what? Demoralized? Perplexed? Resigned? Wild-eyed mad?
After Arkansas beat UK 77-76 in overtime Wednesday night, Coach John Calipari let reporters know his preferred reaction.
"You'd have to ask them," he said of the UK players' reaction. "I know I'm angry."
Bringing about the proper response to a historic sixth SEC road loss is part of coaching, Calipari said. Since the SEC went to divisional play in 1991-92, no Kentucky team had lost six road games. That the losses have come by a total of 18 points only heightened the frustration.
"You've got to get sick and tired of it," Calipari said, "and change it. Sometimes you've got to get angry with each other."

NCAA Ruling on UCONN
PENALTIES.
For the reasons set forth in Parts A and B of this report, the Committee on Infractions found that this case involved major violations of NCAA legislation. In determining the appropriate penalties to impose, the committee considered the institution's self-imposed penalties and corrective actions. [Note: The institution's corrective actions are contained in Appendix Two.]
The committee also considered the institution's cooperation in the processing of this case. Cooperation during the infractions process is addressed in Bylaw 19.01.3 - Responsibility to Cooperate, which states in relevant part that, "All representatives of member institutions shall cooperate fully with the NCAA enforcement staff, Committee on Infractions, Infractions Appeals Committee and Board of Directors. The enforcement policies and procedures require full and complete disclosure by all institutional representatives of any relevant information requested by the NCAA Enforcement Staff, Committee on Infractions or Infractions Appeals Committee during the course of an inquiry." Further, NCAA Bylaw 32.1.4 – Cooperative Principle, also addresses institutional responsibility to fully cooperate during infractions investigations, stating, in relevant part, "The cooperative principle imposes an affirmative obligation on each institution to assist the enforcement staff in developing full information, to determine whether a possible violation of NCAA legislation has occurred and the details thereof." The committee determined that the cooperation exhibited by the institution met its obligation under Bylaws 19.01.3.3 and 32.1.4 but did not rise to a level of "extraordinary." The cooperation the institution demonstrated in this case must be weighed against the conduct and failures of the institution and its personnel as set forth in Section B above. The committee concluded that in light of the serious nature of the violations and the failure of the institution to detect and/or prevent them, the institution's cooperation did not warrant relief in the penalties imposed by the committee in this case:
1. Public reprimand and censure.
2. Three years of probation from February 22, 2011, through

Winning Dunk from the NBA Dunk Contest!
Incase everyone hasn't notice.... Dunking in the dunk contest is only HALF the story. Judges look at the presentation before and after the dunk, the composure of the player, how much swag they have and difficulty. I mean, I personally would love to see everybody who's saying Blake's dunks are overrated make a video of themselves catching an alley and putting their arm in the rim, catch a windmill of the side of the backboard, and jump of a car. Give that man respect.

Once-overlooked Rondo ends up being an all-time Draft steal
Rondo is not just the steal of the 2006 Draft ... he is a steal for the ages. That he will play in the 2011 All-Star Game while most other '06 arrivals are struggling to play anywhere (or have already washed out of the league) is what makes Rondo and Danny Ainge look better by the day.It was Ainge, Boston's president of basketball operations, who targeted Rondo and found a trade partner in the late-teens or early-20s, the projected landing spot for the then-Kentucky sophomore Rondo. Ainge arranged a deal with the Suns: If Rondo was there at 21, Phoenix would take him and trade Rondo and Brian Grant's weighty salary to the Celtics for a 2007 first-round choice.

UK Target Archie Goodwin #18 in Rivals Class of 2012 Little Rock AR.
Kentucky offered me a scholarship the night after the Watson Chapel game. Kentucky assistant coach Orlando Antigua and I e-mail a lot — about every other day. We’ll talk about how they’re doing, and how they can get better. He’ll ask how I’m doing. I e-mail Coach Cal [John Calipari, Kentucky's head coach] sometimes, but I mostly call him. All the coaches try to stay in contact with me, but Antigua does more often. Every time I talk to a coach it’ll be a long talk. They always want to talk your ear off. They’ll talk to me, then pass the phone to the other coach, who’ll talk to me, then pass the phone to the other one. They can go on for a long time, but I don’t mind — I love talking to coaches. I’m blessed to be in the position I’m in.
Goodwin was averaging 29 points, eight rebounds, four assists, three steals and two blocks per game. The Bears are 16-3 as of Feb. 14.

ESPN Article on DeMarcus Cousins immature are we surprised?
And this isn't just about Cousins. It's far bigger than him. He's simply indicative of a too-much-too-soon mentality, where the physical outweighs the emotional and a kid gets shredded publicly for behaving in a way everyone feared he would behave in the first place. And, along the way, the shredding gets justified by the fact that he's making a crazy amount of money that someone gave him precisely because they ignored the emotional and went all-in on the physical.

Prince scores 25 in Pistons win over Raptors
Prince scored 23 of his 25 points in the second and third quarters, helping the Pistons pull away from the Toronto Raptors in a 95-76 win Wednesday night. The lanky forward has often been overlooked in his seven seasons in Detroit, where he has been surrounded by All-Stars. But his ability to be a shutdown defender and make an array of shots has made him an unsung contributor. “I call him the ‘Quiet Assassin’ because he gets the job done quietly,” teammate Jason Maxiell said. “People may forget about him, but he gets the job done.”

UK AD Barnhart on the Sky-Cam in Rupp
Mitch Barnhart tweet "We have expressed the concerns with the new overhead camera use at future games & will no longer approve the camera location in the future."
Darius Miller comes off the bench to hit 3-7 from three point range.
As Darius Miller lined up a shot Tuesday night, he could hear Mississippi State Coach Rick Stansbury tell the defenders to let the Kentucky wing shoot.
An insult?
"I don't mind them playing off me," Miller said after UK's 85-79 victory. "I was glad he was saying it. I don't have a problem at all. I hope everybody's saying it."
"You have to pick your poison," Stansbury said. ". . . Last year, you felt you could take away a few things. This (UK) team, it's very difficult to take things away because this team is so skilled one through four."

Kentucky fans experienced some dizziness last night
Television viewers of Tuesday's Mississippi State-Kentucky men's basketball game might have experienced some dizziness, and it wasn't from the pace of the game. ESPN used a shot from an overhead camera, perched in the Rupp Arena rafters, as its main angle for much of the game. "We were trying to show offensive and defensive sets from above," said J.D. Rutledge of ESPN. "It was something we wanted to take a look at."

Coach Cal uses defense to get the Cats motor going.
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) -- John Calipari had seen enough. The Kentucky coach watched the Wildcats jog through 25 mostly uninspired minutes against Mississippi State on Tuesday night when he ordered his team to go to a fullcourt press. The goal wasn't necessarily to turn the heat up on the Bulldogs, but on Calipari's own players. "We just had no fire, no fight," Calipari said. "I told them, 'We're pressing man to man and if you choose to go back, I'm subbing you."' Message received.

The UK men's basketball team hangs on at Rupp Arena to defeat Mississippi State 85-79. UK remains undefeated at home under Coach Cal.
TWITTER BACK IN THE NEWS: OSU Jared Sullinger spitting incident at Wisconsin
Sullinger Twitter Comments shortly after Saturday's game:
"Buckeye Nation if you ever decide to rush the court. Don't ever spit on the opponents. Just a lil tip from me to you." He later added another Tweet: "To be spit on is just nasty. On top of that in my Face. Before and after the game. Smh [shake my head]. I just kept walking."
Ohio State coach Thad Matta tried to downplay the incident on the league conference call on Monday.
"A student ran by and spit on him. Nothing too major," Matta said. "What are you going to do? Those things happen. It was a crazy environment, which was great for college basketball and for their fans, that sort of stuff. You don't like to see that happen but you can't do anything about it."

On this date in 1994 Cats vs LSU: Miracle Comeback
"LSU starts off on fire, they go up by 31 Points in the 2nd half. The LSU goes stone cold and Kentucky lights it up. It was one of those comback for the ages."

Kentucky Coach Rick Pitino knew it was the best comeback he had ever seen. It was even better than that.
Pitino's 11th-ranked Wildcats pulled off the greatest comeback in college history, rallying from a 31-point deficit Tuesday night to beat Louisiana State, 99-95, In Baton Rouge, La.
That broke a record set on Dec. 30, 1950, when Duke rallied from a 56-27 halftime deficit to beat Tulane, 74-72.

NBA Scouts comment on the Jones / Knight and others.
Terrence Jones, 6-8 freshman forward, Kentucky
He's a lottery pick. He scores inside and in transition. His shot is low, but if he takes his time he can make shots. He needs to be a little less selfish with the basketball, but he's a talented kid. He's a poor man's Michael Beasley. I'm not sure I trust his shot yet, but man, he competes. People ask, What position is he? I say he's a basketball player.
Brandon Knight, 6-3 freshman guard, Kentucky
Mature personality, fantastic worker, can really shoot the basketball. Winning matters to him. He's in the first round if he comes out, for sure. People try to compare him to Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans, but he's not at their level. The one thing I will say about him is he's an absolute gym rat. He loves being in the gym and working on his game. He may not be a prototypical point guard, but with his work ethic, size, speed and ability to shoot, you have to take a chance on him.
Kemba Walker, 6-1 junior guard, UConn
I think he'll get his feelings hurt up here. He's a big-time competitor, but he's not the feel player these guys are up here in the NBA. He can be like a Jose Juan Barea. Just let him play pick-and-roll at the top. It's just hard to score in the NBA when you're little. I like the fact that he has matured because to be honest with you, I hated him last year. He made so many plays and it was all about him, but he has really gotten better with that. In draft rooms there will be a lot of discussions between him, Fredette and Brandon Knight.
Jared Sullinger, 6-9 freshman forward, Ohio State
I love him. He's like Elton Brand but he's a better basketball player. If he's not No. 1, he's not lasting past the top three. He'll get his shot blocked just like Kevin Love did, but his shooting percentage already accounts for that. He's comfortable with both hands and he makes free throws. He just has a great feel for the game, and you can tell winning is important to him. My concern is that he doesn't have a lot of upside, he's a finished product. And he's not a great athlete, so he has a ceiling.
Harrison Barnes, 6-foot-8 freshman forward, North Carolina
I finally figured him out. People have been trying to say he's Marvin Williams, but I think he's Sean Elliott. He's not a star, but he's an all-around good player. If you're expecting a franchise player, you're going to be sadly mistaken, but he can definitely help. If he came out, I'm not sure he'd be a top-five pick, but if he slipped to eight or nine people would come up with reasons why they should take him instead of why they shouldn't.

The Nash Report: Scouting Michael Gilchrist
Strengths: Most gifted players at the high school level allow their talent to carry them on most nights. Gilchrist combines his talent with a passion and drive that you do not see too often from a high school athlete. His athleticism makes him an incredible rebounder who tracks down boards all over the floor and above the rim. His ball-handling has improved to the level where he can rebound the ball and lead a fast break while making good decisions. He is the ultimate mismatch as an offensive player in the halfcourt. Put a bigger player on him and he will beat you off the dribble, throw a smaller player on him and he will post you up. He possesses a deadly pull-up jumper to 15-feet and has improved his 3-point shooting so that you must respect him to 20-feet. On the defensive end, he is tenacious and really gets up for the challenge of shutting opponents down. He plays great team defense, which is a trademark for a Kevin Boyle-coached team.

#1 Kansas goes down to Kansas State
K-State helps its NCAA chances with much-needed upset of Kansas.
Perhaps the more interesting impact is what the loss does to Kansas' profile.
The Jayhawks already were the fourth No. 1 seed in Monday's updated
bracket and Duke (and others) was aggressively in pursuit. Kansas still has
better quality top wins than the Blue Devils, but this loss somewhat offsets
that the Jayhawks' other defeat came against 1-seed Texas and is similar
in quality to Duke's loss at Florida State.

Bizarre News: Kansas hires Senior Citizens to make sure their Athletes attend class.
"They're sneaky sometimes—they'll get you," said freshman guard Royce Woolridge on a recent chilly Monday, strolling out of a classroom that a slim, gray-haired 63-year-old man had slinked by several times in an effort to determine whether Mr. Woolridge was sitting in the very back row, and if so, whether he was awake. The usually verbose John Calipari said so much with three little words after Kentucky beat Tennessee 73-61 Tuesday night. "We showed toughness," Calipari said.
At long last, after getting metaphorical sand kicked in their faces again and again this season, the Cats grabbed the tough rebounds, got the loose balls and took the initiative.

Coach Cal's Mailbag on Fox Sports South
Coach Cal takes a few questions from the fans.
Q1. What did you say to the team after the game in the locker room?
Q2. What has surprised you most about your team this season?
Q3. Who is the most impressive team/player that you've matched up against this season in the SEC?
Q4. Who was your favorite athlete while you were growing up?
Q5. Where did you watch the Super Bowl game?
Q6. What is your birthday tradition or memory?
Vols freshman Tobias Harris, the one that got away?
This pic shows Coach Cal doing what he does best, recruiting. Tobias and Coach Cal were watching John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Patrick Paterson, Eric Bledsoe and Danial Orton during a practice in Memorial Coliseum October 2009. Tobias later made a visit to Tennessee and made his decision to play for the Vols shortly after that. Why did Tobias choose the Vols over the Cats? At the time of this photo he had to be thinking man, I may not get any playing time in Lexington... Who knew that Demarcus Cousins, Patrick Patterson, Daniel Orton and Enes Kanter were not going to be on the floor tonight in Rupp when Tobias Harris takes the floor for the Vols. Tobias is putting up 15 points and and 8 rebounds this season, ouch.

Bruce Pearl returns to Volunteers after eight-game SEC ban to face Kentucky
"When Commissioner [Mike] Slive penalized me the eight games I think he originally wanted to do 10, but when he looked at the schedule and saw that I have to go to Rupp and the O'Dome, he decided to settle for just eight and make me go those two place," Pearl joked Monday.

John Clay: UK basketball, the good and the bad
When a basketball team is 4-4 halfway through conference play, there should be an equal amount of good news and bad news. When Kentucky is 4-4, the school's worst conference mark after eight games since 1989-90, there is probably more bad than good. But, hey, we're trying to keep a positive attitude here.

Cat's fight back from early foul trouble but come up short, 70-68 in Gainesville.
The Wildcats (16-6, 4-4) had a final chance, but Brandon Knight's 3-pointer came up short. Tyus had a hand in Knight's face.
